Education

The Education Committee works with the vestry and priests of Epiphany to provide age-appropriate Christian formation programs that are based on scripture and the basics of Episcopal faith. Forming ourselves as Christians is a key part of preparing ourselves to serve Christ in the world.  We need to know our faith in ways personal, experiential, and intellectual.

Throughout the year, the Education Committee is responsible for a wide variety of programs directed at children, youth and their families. Some of the highlights are Fall Sunday School Kick-off, Parents Morning Out in December, Christmas Eve Pageant, Easter Egg Hunt, Mother's Day Flower Distribution, End-of-the-Year Pool Party in June and Vacation Bible School in the summer.

Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m. and continues until children are brought into the sanctuary to participate in communion and to receive the Holy Eucharist. Preschool and kindergarteners return to class, but 1st through 5th graders stay in church with their families for the duration of the service.

♦ Children's Programs

Programs utilize “Living the Good News” curriculum for preschoolers through fifth grade. This year's theme is "Healing Haiti's Heart-Building Faith Brick by Brick." Epiphany's children are going to be earning money to buy $10 bricks to rebuild one of Haiti's churches that was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake. The Episcopal Diocese of Nevada now has a sister parish, St. Luc's in Leogane, Haiti, that they will support as they rebuild their sanctuary and school. Sunday School teachers for all age groups will be using this as a great way in providing lessons to our children on how outreach really does work and how they can make a difference! Keep an eye on the narthex as the children track their progress by posting the bricks they buy. If you want to buy a brick see Miss Betty-Jeanne Cousins and she will happily sell you one!

For more details on more children's events please check news and events pages.

♦ Youth Programs

Our young adults are encouraged to be an active part of the parish life as well. We invite them to participate as readers, teachers, acolytes, and greeters. The junior high school kids meet weekly on Sunday mornings for discussion of life topics using "Confirm not Conform" as a curriculum.

The senior high school group meets monthly for dinner, an evening worship service, discussion of current events and the tough decisions that confront teens at this point in their lives. Our goal for our youth is fellowship and thinking about the world and their role through Christ's eyes.

Additionally, the youth host occasional events such as a car wash, a cake auction and Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.

Both programs are growing and evolving - your participation is welcome!

♦ Adult Programs

Throughout the year there are many learning opportunities for adults such as book study groups, speaker-led discussions, short topical courses and ongoing study programs that are both prayer and action related.  Seasonal educational opportunities in Lent and Advent help compliment the liturgical calendar. There are also programs such as Education for Ministry (EfM) and baptismal/confirmation preparation.
